The 50th Anniversary of Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol

I'm sorry to say that posting will once again be light simply because people forget about Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol for about 11 months of the year.  However, 2012 will mark the 50th anniversary of the special and although it's too soon to tell what will happen to mark the occasion, I will periodically update this blog when there's something to report.  It also promises to be a banner year for both Mr. Magoo and UPA with the upcoming publication of the definitive book on UPA, When Magoo Flew, as well as the DVD release of the UPA theatrical shorts (both in March) and all of Magoo's theatrical cartoons including the feature 1001 Arabian Nights (June).  To stay tuned to any and all developments, either become a follower of this blog by clicking on Join This Site at the right or like the book's page on Facebook.

And if you have any information, photos or art from either the Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol or UPA's television era that you think might be worthy of inclusion in a 50th anniversary edition of the book, please contact me as soon as possible via info@mrmagooschristmascarol.com.

I was so pleased to find this site and to find that sheet music for Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol has finally been released. It has been one of my all-time favorites since it was first released. For years I would search and after awhile i gave up. Do you have any information as to the stage rights? With the transfer of so many classic holiday stories to the Broadway stage, I'm surprised that Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol has not been produced. Is it tied up in family estate battles?

No, it's not tied up and I know that all parties are interested in it. The idea has been bandied about for several years but nothing has come of it. If I had to guess, I would say that it's a matter of money and the lean times we're in. It may yet happen and perhaps the 50th anniversary will provide some impetus.

Stay tuned to this site, there's more to come this year.

This is my favorite Christmas special though I haven't seen it in many years. The music is fantastic and there hasn't been anything else like it. I'll be following your updates.

Thanks for checking in, Adriene! There should be some updates coming soon...

Considering how fundamentally silly the main series was, this series of specials based on great books was pretty professionally done, and this one was the very best. I liked it enough, even as a cynical teenager, that when I found the video tape recently I bought it at once. The songs really are clever, and I like how closely they stuck to the original, despite dumbing down some of the long speeches. All in all it was a nice piece of work, and I'm glad it's still remembered.
